Embodied Phonetics

A project aimed at understanding how embodiment affects speech production, including effects of 1) age, gender, development & health, and 2) gravity, body position & physical activity.

Description

This project aims to investigate and understand how speech production is dependent on our bodies. Several corpora are being developed from this project and will be linked below as they become available. This project includes an educational component through integration with undergraduate courses in “Speech Science” and “Embodied Phonetics”, and is also supported by participation in the Indiana University Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) Fellows program.

Articulation and Gravity Corpora

These corpora employed 3D/4D ultrasound together with a microphone to record tongue movement and speech acoustics during production of sustained vowels and fricatives, and monosyllables embedded in a carrier phrase, in two postures: upright and supine. There were two sets of stimuli, and each participant was semi-randomly assigned to one set. One set of stimuli focused on vowels, while the other set focused on fricatives; a number of stimuli appear in both sets.

Subglottal Acoustics Corpora

These corpora employed an accelerometer to record subglottal acoustics, and a microphone to record speech, during production of a variety speech stimuli, in different postures, and with different lung volumes. Pulmonary function tests and MRI images of the lungs were also obtained for some of these corpora.
